The Strength of a Community: Supporting Each Other Through Times of Change

“The strength of a people. The strength of a community. The strength of a family. These things will hold us together.” – Maya Angelou

There are moments that urge us to pause, to look around with open hearts, and to reach out to one another, saying, I see you—I am with you. In times like these, when so much feels uncertain, our true strength emerges not from what we know, but from whom we hold close.

We find resilience in the power of connection, in the warmth of shared purpose, and in the unbreakable fabric of our community. Together, we transform uncertainty into solidarity, finding comfort and courage in each other’s presence.

At Homeless Children’s Network (HCN), we know that moments of great change are moments when our community must come together. As emotions run high and the weight of what lies ahead feels heavy, we stand firmly rooted in the values that give us strength: compassion, care, and connection. These values remind us that, regardless of our individual experiences, we share a common purpose—to uplift and support one another.

As an organization, we are here to hold space for the entire range of emotions this moment brings. Some may feel hopeful, some may feel uncertain, and others may feel the heavy burden of fear. All of these feelings are valid. We honor them and hold them together as a community that is, above all else, a place of healing and belonging.

Today, we are grateful to share a message from our CEO, Dr. April Silas, who speaks from the heart to remind us that through all that we face, we are not alone. Her words resonate with the compassion and care that define HCN:

Good Morning HCN Community,

I greet each of you warmly as we traverse this delicate and somewhat chaotic time in our world’s history.

With all that I will share, nothing is more than saying… I care and I’m here to listen.

We’ve reminded each other many times as of late how important and interconnected self-care and community care truly is.

Being a healing space in our world requires us to be present and honest about our own well-being and that of our community.

Wherever you find yourself today, I encourage you to breathe deeply, pause when needed, and take time for yourself. Let’s support each other with kindness and patience, trusting that the strength within our community is here to hold us together.

Recognizing that there are varied emotions and sensibilities in our community in response to all that is happening in our city, nation, and world, I am here to hold space for us all.

At any point today or this week, please feel free to reach out—I’m here to listen and to gather any thoughts on how our community might come together to support and ground.

Please know you are not alone on this journey. Let’s move forward together with intention, compassion, and a shared commitment to our mission and each other.

Respectfully,

April
